Thumbs up for 2016 ABA Big Year birders to include Hawaii!!

20 December, 2017 (updated 5 January, 2018)

The American Birding Association has released its updated checklist of species (Version 8.0.1), which includes all three of the ‘provisional’ mainland species that many 2016 birders were sweating on (Cuban Vireo, Pine Flycatcher, and Common Shelduck), and a magnificent complement of Hawaiian bird species. Additionally, and of even greater significance to the Big Year competitors of 2016, the ABA has ruled that our post-annexure Hawaiian sightings are approved for inclusion on our 'New ABA Area' year-lists: http://blog.aba.org/2017/12/2016-big-year-competition.html .
And so, the record-setting scores of the 2016 ABA Big Year are summarised below, along with the 2017 results. Both tables below are borrowed from the remarkable Big Year data sets of birding historian Joe Lill, as presented on Wikipedia.

Following are the all time rankings for the 'New ABA' area as per Wikipedia:

Like all competitive records, I accept that it’s clearly only a matter of time (and timing – see previous post, below), before some gung-ho lunatic steals the crown. But in the mean time, I've got the urge to flaunt - so I've put in my order to the New South Wales Dept of Motor Vehicles for a fresh set of licence plates:

Happy New Year to everyone, and a special congratulations to the 2017 Big Year birders, who did such an amazing job this year of bringing the sport to a new standard. Its been a tight race that has kept many of us on the edges of our seats. And a massive Merry Christmas to everyone everywhere who owns a pair of binoculars, and a hope for the rest of you that Santa drops a pair down your chimney!
